First celebrated on March 5, 1934 in Amarillo, Texas, the first Mother-in-Law Day was promoted and initiated by the editor of Amarillo’s local newspaper. Modeled after Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Mother-in-Law Day was meant to provide a day to honor and appreciate mothers-in-law. Although the holiday is not an official holiday, meaning it has not yet been recognized by the United States Federal Government, Mother-in-Law Day’s popularity has grown across the nation. The holiday is now celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of October.
Popular culture has unfortunately given mothers-in-law a negative reputation, often placing them at the punch line of mean-spirited jokes. Most sons and daughters-in-law, however, enjoy positive relationships with their mothers-in-law, proving the stereotype wrong. This Mother-in-Law Day celebrates your friendship, gratitude, and respect for the woman who raised the person you love most in the world, your mother-in-law, with a family dinner, a day of special activities or relaxation, and gifts like candy, jewelry, and flowers.
