The Tradition of Honoring Mothers
Mother’s Day is a fairly recent addition to the calendar, becoming an official holiday in 1914, but honoring mothers and motherhood has been part of the human tradition for generations. In ancient times, people sacrificed to gods of motherhood to celebrate all that moms do for their children. In the 1880s, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a mom from West Virginia, organized Mothers’ Friendship Day, a day when women and former soldiers united to promote reconciliation after the Civil War.
When Ann Reeves Jarvis died, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, decided to organize a day to honor the sacrifices of mothers. The first Mother’s Day was held at a church in 1908, and since that time it developed into a tradition that is celebrated across the country.
